The # symbol, called a hashtag, is used to mark keywords or categories in a Tweet

You can use the hashtag symbol # before a relevant keyword or phrase (no spaces) to categorise your Tweets making them easier to find in Twitter Search.

Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets marked with that keyword. You can place a # anywhere in your Tweet – at the beginning, middle, or end.  Hashtagged words that become very popular can become Trending Topics

So here is an example Tweet

Twitter hashtag example

It contains clickable links to #UKStorm2013 and #PowerPoint

Good practice

  • Don’t use too many hashtags in a single tweet (Twitter recommends no more than 2)
  • Use hashtags that are relevant to your topic
  • Check what other people are using a hashtag for before you decide to use it
