You may have heard the news during the beginning of June 2014 warning people about a malicious virus called Gameover Zeus

Computer Safety

What is Gameover Zeus?

Gameover Zeus is a sophisticated piece of malware (read more about malware) which can hijack your PC without your knowledge.  It can give the attackers control of it and access to your information.  They can even record your keystrokes, video you through your webcam and see what you do on screen.

What do they use Gameover for?

Their aim is to search for any financial information stored on your computer as well as capturing any logins you enter into online banking or shopping sites. Once they have this information, they use it to re-direct bank transfers into their own accounts.

To date, law enforcement agency estimates that this piece of malware has stolen hundreds of millions of pounds (UK's National Crime Agency)

What is Cryptolocker?

If the Gameover Zeus malware doesn't find any financial information on your PC, the criminals have designed it so that it may install something known as CryptoLocker.

Cryptolocker Ransomware

Known as Ransomware, Cryptolocker encrypts your computer's hard drive, locking access to everything you have stored on it, and demanding your pay a ransom in order to get it unlocked.

How do I protect myself from these?

Here are some simple common sense steps you can take to ensure you don't get infected with malware such as Gameover Zeus.

Firstly it only affects users of Microsoft Windows (so Mac is not affected)

Gameover Zeus is spread by opening attachments or links to websites in a received email.  So here is the most important step.

  • NEVER open attachments or click links in emails that you are not expecting.  Usually they come disguised as generic emails such as "The attached voicemail was left for you" or "Click here to get your undelivered UPS package."

How can I check whether my computer is infected with Gameover Zeus?

AVG provide a tool specifically designed to scan your computer and remove the threat.
