iOS8

So What's New?

Here are just some of the main new features...

HealthKit

The HealthKit app is the most obviously new feature.

The HealthKit app helps you to monitor (and improve) your fitness levels and health.  It offers various built-in functionality such as heart-rate monitoring, tracking your steps while you walk/jog and much more.  This HealthKit is there in readiness to integrated with the Apple Watch that is due for release next year.

The Apple website says "Let your health and fitness apps communicate with each other, with your trainer, and even with your doctor"

iCloud Drive

iCloud Drive is a bit like DropBox or OneDrive.  It lets you access your files from anywhere in the world, and from within any device via the iCloud service.

QuickType Keyboard

Your keyboard will now suggest 'contextually appropriate words' as you type. It recognises to whom you are typing and what you are typing in i.e. Mail or Messages.  You can now install custom keyboards such as SwiftKey.

Family Sharing

Up to six people can easily share each other's purchases from iTunes, iBooks, and the App Store. You can also keep up with each other's Photos, Calendars, Locations, and more.

Photos

The Camera Roll has gone so you can’t just view every photo.  However the new Photos app makes it simpler to find your photos.  As well as new search features it encourages you to use albums to be more organised.

iMessage

Instead of just sending text and photos you can now tap to add a voice message or send an instant video clip to any conversation. You can also share your location.

Improved Spotlight feature

Spotlight now includes suggestions from Wikipedia entries, places nearby, trending news, and more. It recognises your context and location in an attempt to offer you the most relevant results.

So How do I get iOS8?

Go to Settings  settings-ios7

Tap General then Software Update and follow the instructions there.

Otherwise you can just wait until your device offers to install it.

You might find you need to delete some files or apps to make space to install it.
